Narcotic Identification and Investigation

From the recognition of commonly abused drugs, to the legal aspects of search and seizure, to the proper procedures for collecting the evidence, this course will give you a broad and solid foundation for handling drug cases and investigations. We will explore the latest trends in street level drug abuse as well as the common techniques used in drug trafficking. You will learn about the physiological effects of different drugs and what to expect if you encounter a person under the influence. In addition, you will be presented with investigative techniques that may be used, including undercover operations, surveillance procedures, drug raids, and more. Topics include: • Identification and recognition of commonly abused drugs • Overview of illicit drug traffic and trends • The physiological effects of drugs • Intelligence reports and case initiation • Informant utilization • Raid planning and preparation • Legal issues • Drug laboratories • Evidence and handling procedures • Officer safety
Audience: Patrol officers, investigators, supervisors, military investigative personnel - Class is restricted to sworn law enforcement officers and those personnel assigned directly to law enforcement agencies.
Course length: 40 hours
